A quest for firewood...
As children, we grew up in a family that heated their home with a single wood burning stove. Thankfully, Arizona winters are relatively mild and short, but after years of starting and stoking fires-- one thing is for sure, we definitely know firewood.
The perfect firewood is the one that suits your needs.
Firewood can be categorized into two basic types: hardwood and softwood.
- Hardwoods are more dense, therefore burn longer and produce higher heat. They are excellent for cooking and heating.
- Softwoods are lighter, ignite quickly and burn fast, normally used to start fires.
Before purchasing firewood ask yourself:
"How will I primarily use the wood?"
If the answer is:
Heating fuel only- choose eucalyptus and pine (but only to start the fire, as this wood burns extremely fast)
Heating and cooking fuel- mesquite or oak
Cooking fuel only- apple (also excellent for heating, but due to limited quantities you'll want to keep all you have for cooking) and pecan
Buying firewood can be tricky...
Once you know the type of firewood you'll need, be sure it is:
- properly seasoned (dried adequately)
- a true measured quantity
